Earth Day: Good For The Wallet and Planet

This year’s Earth Day is centered around the theme “one billion acts of green,” which promotes individuals to make simple environmentally friendly changes.  It encourages people to reduce their carbon footprint by switching off lightbulbs and walking short distances rather than getting in their cars.

We’ve heard this a million times, though.  Riding your bike a few times a week or refilling  the same water bottle sometimes doesn’t make you feel that your actions are making a huge change for the planet, right?  Instead of feeling like it doesn’t make a difference for the globe, think about the difference in your wallet.  Insignificant acts of “green” directly impact your daily expenses.

The Activists’ Power of Social Media

If anyone still doubts the power of social media, they obviously don’t know what’s going on in the world around them.  Activists have recently used Facebook as their platform to persuade Mattel Inc. to create a new Barbie.

With nearly 35,000 people signing the petition for change, and about 160,000 “likes” on Facebook, Mattel could not ignore the strong demand from consumers.  ”Beautiful and Bald Barbie! Let’s see if we can get it made” is the name of the Facebook group.  The admins of the page are collecting photos of cancer patients that have lost their hair in the hopes of creating a sense of community and support.  Here is an empowering excerpt from the group:

“Unlike men, who having a bald head is trendy and a fashion statement, women and children are stared at and often teased when they go in public, expected to cover their bald heads. We want to stop the shame and stigma that children and women deal with having hair loss.

We think accessories such as wigs, bandanas, scarves and hats could be included. This would be a great coping mechanism for young girls dealing with hair loss themselves or a loved one. We would love to see a portion of proceeds go to childhood cancer research and treatment. Let’s get Mattel’s attention!”

The group members are claiming, “Victory!” The new dolls will be available at Toys ‘R Us sometime in June of this year.

Have you ever used social media as a platform for change?

Please Don’t Stop The Music: Gio’s Playlist

Girl groups and boy bands, you love to hate them. Read more to see how one of our own still cites them as fashion inspiration.

Who: Gio, Junior Publicist: Fashion Department

When Music and Fashion Collide:

From my earliest childhood memories I thought I was part of Diana Ross and the Supremes. I have always had an affinity for girl groups. Growing up as I tomboy I was never a fan of dresses, pink and ruffles, but strong independent girl groups showed me that there were alternatives.

Salt-n-Pepa taught me that it’s OK to wear insane amounts of gold jewelry. Those door knocker earrings were on point, but today I incorporate their in-your-face gold obsession with layering and stacking different styles of gold bracelets. They also made it completely cool to always wear sneakers. These Lanvin sneaks are to die for.

TLC enlightened me that innerwear is outerwear and bold colors are a sure way to make a statement, case and point their video for “Creep.”  This bold orange Free People top reminds me of the silk PJ’s and the amazing dance sequence. Also they comforted my baggy jeans obsession. Today I translate that into a comfy pair of Madewell boyfriend jeans.

Destiny’s Child established that monochromatic matching can be done and that camo was in. Granted today I’ve strained this into utilitarian inspiration wearing pieces like this Alexander Wang army green tee. (I’m secretly still waiting for a reunion.)

Do you get excited when one of your favorite 90′s bands comes on your iTunes?

TV and Music Legend Dick Clark Passes at 82

Dick Clark passed away this morning at age 82 in Santa Monica due to a “massive heart attack.”  He has been a public figure to multiple generations and will be greatly missed.

Dick Clark: (L) American Bandstand (R) New Year's Rockin' Eve

The American Bandstand host helped mainstream America accept rock ‘n’ roll, which launched Clark’s career as producer and host of many other hit shows.

His good looks, even through his 70′s, earned him the nickname the “eternal teenager.”  Following a stroke in 2004, he was forced to abbreviate his hosting duties on “New Years’ Rockin’ Eve,” a show he created in 1972.  Ryan Seacrest has since stepped in to help co-host, and although he’s done a great job filling in, New Years Eve 2013 won’t be the same without Clark!

From the pioneering series American Bandstand to his annual “Dick Clark’s New Years’ Rockin’ Eve,” this New Yorker has become a legend in the entertainment industry.

His signature sign-off was always “For now, Dick Clark… so long,” followed by a salute.  P3R is definitely saluting him back today- May he rest in peace.

7 Things You Don’t Know About Twins

Twins get asked the same questions over and over, so we asked psychic twin sisters Chinhee and Sunhee Park to come up with 7 things about being a twin, separately. It’s pretty funny to see how similar/opposing the girls’ statements are! Here’s what they had to say…

Sunhee and Chinhee as babies

As told by Chinhee Park-

1) We like to dress totally opposite of each other.  Occasionally we dress alike, to challenge people to look deeper into how to tell us apart.

2) Even though we are only born twenty minutes apart, Sunhee will always act like the “elder” and make me feel like I’m twenty years younger than her. :)

3) As for relationships, we have never been attracted to the same person, but there are people who have been attracted to both of us.

4) People may think we look exactly alike, but I don’t think so! There are obviously similarities but it’s as if we aren’t even twins – maybe cousins?

5) We may look a lot alike to outsiders, but we are completely different people.  Our personalities are night and day.

6) Sunhee dresses very trendy conservative.  It just makes me want to wear ripped jeans, tank tops and get more tattoos and piercings.

7) Twins are born with high intuition, being psychic makes us more intuitive to the point we don’t even have to talk to each other.

-

As told by Sunhee Park-

1) Yes, we have the same taste in clothes, but if she wears the same outfit, I try to walk as far away as possible from her.

2) Yes, we are identical twins but I am more mature and conventional.

3) Yes, we do have to like each other’s partners, and NO we do not like the same types!

4) We work together and live together; I swear we were Siamese in another lifetime.

5) She will talk to someone in the grocery store for an hour, and I will speak for two minutes and then give them my business card – business is business.

6) Yes, we do look a lot alike, but she has tattoos and piercings and I would never do that to myself.

7) Yes, we do read each other’s thoughts and I have to push out her personal ones for my own sanity!

Tupac Comes Back To Life At Coachella

In Coachella this past weekend, one of the most memorable (or perhaps only memory for some concert-goers) was the realistic hologram of Tupac Shakur.  The hologram effect made it appear that Shakur was performing his top hits “Hail Mary” and “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted” alongside Snoop Dogg.

Tupacs’s mother, Afeni Shakur, was reportedly “thrilled” with the hologram of her son, as she was consulted for approval before the performance.  This may just be the beginning of  his hologram since there have been rumors that both Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg have ideas to incorporate it into their tour.

Digital Domain Media Group created “Tupac” from piecing together previous performances and movements recorded before the rapper’s death in 1996.  It was not footage; they completely created this illusion using computer graphics.

Dr. Dre contacted AV Concepts, who used a version of old-school technology called the “Pepper’s Ghost.” The image projected onto a reflective piece of Mylar stretched on a clear frame.  The company won’t divulge the exact price, but says that the project was in the $100,000 to $400,000 range.

Do you think this hologram idea will continue into “performances” of other deceased artists? Is Bob Marley next?
