Repeat Offenders: Cannes Winners 2012

Although there was no mistaking the American influence, this year’s top prizes went to foreign directors that are nothing but deserving according to the twenty-two person panel of this year’s Cannes film festival. The top prize won by Austrian director Michael Haneke was for his film “Amour.” Although known for his films with a strong use of violence, Haneke created a movie that this time was inspired by his life and the strong bond of love between him and his wife.

Haneke is one of seven directors to win the top prize twice having brought ten films in total to the Cannes film festival. Italian director Matteo Garrone took home the second-place prize with his film “Reality” and England’s Ken Loach won third-place for “The Angels’ Share.” Both directors, alike Haneke, are far too familiar to the Cannes’ prize-winning circuit. Other award winners included best director won by Mexico’s Carlos Reygadas for “Post Tenebras Lux,” best actor won by Mads Mikkelsen for his part as an alleged child abuser in “The Hunt,” and best actress won by both Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan for their work as friends distanced by faith in “Beyond the Hills.” Congratulations to all of you, we can’t wait to see your work.

Cannes You Predict The Winner?

This Wednesday, the 65th annual Cannes Film Festival kicked off with Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” about two preteens in the 1960s who fall in love and run away to a New England isle. This more childish film, although received very well, greatly contrasts the majesty tied to the film festival where two things are noticeable, the strong American influence in the surroundings and the celebration of the 65th anniversary.

In celebration of the anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival, arguably the most critically acclaimed, are an array of films spanning the history of the movie industry and various restorations.  In the center of the entire production at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France stands the timeless Marilyn Monroe blowing out a birthday candle and inside Hollywood’s most famous line the walls. Amongst the most anticipated films this year are Lee Daniels’ “The Paperboy” and Jeff Nicols’ “Mud.” Although numerous expected films such as “On the Road,” “Cosmpolis,” “Killing Them Softly,” and “Lawless” are to many considered “American,” the credit must be paid to filmmakers from abroad. One should also be on the lookout for European directed films such as Jacques Audiard’s “Rust & Bone,” Matteo Garrone’s “Reality,” Ken Loach’s “The Angels’ Share,” and Michael Haneke’s “Amour.” We cannot wait to see who takes home the awards.

Who do you think will win?
