Facebook Facelift

There are two meanings to a ‘Facebook Facelift’: making the juicy details of your life unviewable to the public and nipping and tucking just like, you guessed it, Nip Tuck. Bigger than a television show driving plastic surgery, social medias Facebook and FaceTime are the newest forms of self affirmation that you really look as good, and as bad, as you think.

As Dr. Adam Schaffner, a New York plastic surgeon, explains “When you look in the mirror you’re seeing the mirror image of yourself. But when you see yourself on social media, you’re seeing yourself the way the world sees you.” Now rather than Photoshopping those images of yourself and posing to look skinnier, people are going under the knife. Schaffner is now performing what he calls a “Lifestyle Lift,” and what others calls the  “FaceTime Facelift,” to tighten up the face and appear more attractive on social media. We used to worry that the press were airbrushing the celebrities, but now just like the stars, people are giving themselves a lift. If you want to look better, you should do it for yourself and not others.

The Activists’ Power of Social Media

If anyone still doubts the power of social media, they obviously don’t know what’s going on in the world around them.  Activists have recently used Facebook as their platform to persuade Mattel Inc. to create a new Barbie.

With nearly 35,000 people signing the petition for change, and about 160,000 “likes” on Facebook, Mattel could not ignore the strong demand from consumers.  ”Beautiful and Bald Barbie! Let’s see if we can get it made” is the name of the Facebook group.  The admins of the page are collecting photos of cancer patients that have lost their hair in the hopes of creating a sense of community and support.  Here is an empowering excerpt from the group:

“Unlike men, who having a bald head is trendy and a fashion statement, women and children are stared at and often teased when they go in public, expected to cover their bald heads. We want to stop the shame and stigma that children and women deal with having hair loss.

We think accessories such as wigs, bandanas, scarves and hats could be included. This would be a great coping mechanism for young girls dealing with hair loss themselves or a loved one. We would love to see a portion of proceeds go to childhood cancer research and treatment. Let’s get Mattel’s attention!”

The group members are claiming, “Victory!” The new dolls will be available at Toys ‘R Us sometime in June of this year.

Facebook Buys Instagram For $1 Billion

Last week’s post about Instagram and Android was apparently a pre-cursor to today’s hot social network news. Mark Zuckerberg announced, via Facebook of course, that the company has acquired Instagram.

“I’m excited to share the news that we’ve agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook. For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.”

The popular mobile photo sharing service sold for about $1 billion in cash and stocks.  Many young users of Instagram are worried this app will disappear into Facebook but CEO of Instagram Kevin Systrom assured fans that it “will be the same one you know and love.” The plan is to keep developing Instagram independently from the social network. This will allow users to post on other social networks, follow users not on Facebook, and to opt out of sharing on Facebook.

“8 Social Media Tips For Marketing Films and Movies”

Last week’s Social Media Breakfast LA at Coupa Café was featured in FMM.  The following is an excerpt from Marguerite Darlington‘s story which highlighted speaker Vladimir Kroshinsky‘s (Director of social media and digital marketing strategist at  Creative Asylum) expertise as he shared 8 crucial lessons on how to market entertainment properties:

  1. Be authentic. Talk about something besides your product. Every post you make on your brand page can’t be a call to action. You’ve got to encourage fans to share things that interest them and spark meaningful conversations.
  2. Stop trying to convert fans into sales. If someone is a fan of an entertainment property, this means that they have already purchased your product in some form or fashion. Don’t sell to your fans—turn them into your sales force.
  3. Hone your improv skills. “Social media is like improv,” said Kroshinsky. “You never know which way the conversation is going to go.” Learn to roll with the punches, and hear the feedback your audience is giving you.
  4. Timing is everything. Study your audience, and figure out the best time to post on social networks. Is your target market on the East coast? In London? Tokyo? Know the best day and time to reach your audience, and post accordingly.
  5. Midweek posts get the best response. Kroshinsky has found the most success posting on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
  6. “Second screen” hours get the best engagement. During work hours, people will “like” a post or make a quick comment, but quality engagement comes when people are relaxing at the end of the day, during prime time.
  7. Choose your platform. You don’t have to be on every social network—just the ones where your fans are active. Kroshinsky favors Facebook because “people are on it all day.”
  8. Cross-promote with caution. Just because two films have the same target demographic, it doesn’t mean that fans of one will be fans of the other. Studios have committed some serious social faux pas trying to promote a film on another film’s page.

The Latest Pinterest Craze

Online pinboard “Pinterest” is the hottest, new website.  TechCrunch.com reports, “Pinterest generated 421 million pageviews in the U.S. in October of 2011, up 2,000 percent since June when it was at an estimated 20 million.”

What exactly is Pinterest all about? Imagine what a teenager would decorate their room with: posters, pictures; essentially everything they loves and are inspired by.  The website takes a virtual turn on this concept, as it essentially connects users through the ‘things’ they find interesting.

Pinterest invites visitors to set up their own “pinboards” and “pin/repin” photos they like in categories they create; for instance: favorite recipes, inspirations, wedding/event ideas, DIY, fashion, travel images, could be titles of specific “boards.”

The website is aimed at a wide variety of users, and not all of them consider themselves tech-savvy.  Some users that are perplexed by other forms of social media find this website easier to navigate.

It’s also a great way to discover new products. Businesses are using this popular site to their advantage.  Using Pinterest as another route to connect with customers, many small businesses are seeing increases in revenues.  Businesses that have strong visual appeal can really benefit.   According to Hitwise, “Pinterest is the third most popular social networking site behind Facebook and Twitter in the U.S., with users spending an average of 16 minutes per visit on the site.”
