Cannes You Predict The Winner?
16 May 2012
This Wednesday, the 65th annual Cannes Film Festival kicked off with Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” about two preteens in the 1960s who fall in love and run away to a New England isle. This more childish film, although received very well, greatly contrasts the majesty tied to the film festival where two things are noticeable, the strong American influence in the surroundings and the celebration of the 65th anniversary.
In celebration of the anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival, arguably the most critically acclaimed, are an array of films spanning the history of the movie industry and various restorations. In the center of the entire production at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France stands the timeless Marilyn Monroe blowing out a birthday candle and inside Hollywood’s most famous line the walls. Amongst the most anticipated films this year are Lee Daniels’ “The Paperboy” and Jeff Nicols’ “Mud.” Although numerous expected films such as “On the Road,” “Cosmpolis,” “Killing Them Softly,” and “Lawless” are to many considered “American,” the credit must be paid to filmmakers from abroad. One should also be on the lookout for European directed films such as Jacques Audiard’s “Rust & Bone,” Matteo Garrone’s “Reality,” Ken Loach’s “The Angels’ Share,” and Michael Haneke’s “Amour.” We cannot wait to see who takes home the awards.
Who do you think will win?
